Breathing Space

Let go

“When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be” Lao Tzu

Our body is a library of everything that ever happened to us that we haven’t been able to let go of. Whether it’s fear, resentment, anger or jealousy, our breath is how we let go.

Why breathwork?

Our body is like a library of everything that has ever happened to us that we haven’t fully processed. When we experience emotion, whether fear, excitement, anger or joy, our body feels it - perhaps our heart beats faster, our breath becomes shallower, we may clench our jaw, tingle or sweat.

If an experience causes a lot of fear, as can happen during traumatic events or adverse childhood experiences, it gets frozen in our body so as not to overwhelm our (often very young) system. Yet the fear remains, guiding us subconsciously in our behaviours, so that we never experience that level of fear again. Talking therapy can’t access it if we are not aware of it.

It’s why:

  • We may get irrationally jealous in relationships - because deep down we are terrified of feeling the overwhelming fears of abandonment we may have felt as a child.

  • We may get stuck in patterns of overachieving and burnout - because we were never enough for our parents and so we unconsciously constantly need to prove our worth.

  • We may attract relationships where we find it hard to speak our needs - because we were praised for being seen and not heard.

  • We may develop addictive behaviours - to fill a sense of emptiness or disconnection resulting from emotional attachment needs not being met as a child

Breathwork is a way to release stuck emotions that we're holding in our bodies. It doesn’t matter why it’s there. Much of what we hold is pre-memory and we may never know.

As we breathe in a “conscious connected” way, we support the flow of our breath which allows the release of stuck emotion so that we can open to life in a new and more empowered way.

For me, it's been transformative in living a life that is in alignment with who I am beyond my fears.

Testimonials from my clients:

I spontaneously started running and jumping over a log with my puppy after our session. Given my ME and how I usually feel, such activity is unheard of!”

"For the first time, I felt no fear at all and just saw her [bullying boss] as a child having a tantrum. She no longer had any power over me. I couldn’t believe it!”

Immediately after a breathwork journey, it is common to feel lighter, more peaceful and more relaxed.

Experience a 1:1 or join me at an event below to get a taste for how breathwork can support you to live a life that is more in alignment with who you are.

One to ones (Zoom)

Most of my Breathwork sessions are on Zoom. There’s an option to come in person if you in Brighton.

Depending on the kind of shift you want, sometimes one session is enough. However, if the issue is a long-term one, I prefer to work with people over several sessions.

Zoom sessions are £150.

Whether you are interested in one-off or multiple sessions, I’m happy to chat with you to explain how I work and make sure what I offer is what you need. You can book that here: https://calendly.com/sarahjsamuel/callwithsarah

Group Breathwork

You can experience group breathwork sessions on my retreats and from time to time in Brighton or London. My next event is:

Inner Harmony Day Retreat: A Journey through YinYoga, Breathwork & Sound Healing.
Held by Siobhan Swider & Sarah Samuel

Saturday 11th January 2025

2pm - 5pm

Humankind Yoga Studio, 22 Montague Street, Kemptown, Brighton BN2 1JX

This 3-hour workshop is an invitation to connect with yourself and be guided to balance, clarity and peace.

Siobhan and Sarah discovered the power and joy of working together with sound and breathwork during a sound training that Siobhan was holding recently. As they both worked together intuitively, participants had profound experiences—from physical healing and emotional release to spiritual connection. As a result, we have decided to offer this three-hour workshop.

What to expect: Yin Yoga: Breathwork: A transformative breathwork session to Gong and Alchemy Crystal bowls to clear stagnant energy, release suppressed emotions in a safely held space and awaken inner clarity.

Why Join? Feel Grounded and centred; Reconnect with your body and the present moment. Experience deep relaxation: Reset your nervous system. Release stuckness or held energy: let go of stress or overwhelm. Bring flow and energy back into your breath and life.

Come as you are! No experience necessary. Yoga mats, blankets and bolsters provided. You may want to bring a water bottle and cushion.

Siobhan Swider is an acclaimed harpist and sound healer and trainer. I am delighted to be collaborating with her on this. More details and booking here.
